Alicia has taught workshops through Mystery Writers of America, Romance Writers of America, and the Romantic Times Booklovers Convention. She was a technical advisor for the ABC TV series Betrayal. Her background as a law professor and former FBI Special Agent enables her to offer unique insights about the criminal justice system, law enforcement, and forensic science. Alicia has worked with hundreds of authors, providing manuscript critiques and consulting services.

Behind the Badge: Creating Realistic Law Enforcement Characters

This interactive workshop will dispel myths about FBI Special Agents, police, and other law enforcement officers. Authors will learn how to create realistic law enforcement characters.

Workshop topics:

  • Law enforcement (LE) recruitment, training and hierarchy
  • Preventing and remedying LE misconduct
  • How lack of trust between communities and LE impacts crime and impedes investigations
  • LE stress and suicide
  • Informant development and management
  • Undercover agents: what it’s really like to work in a deep cover assignment

The workshop includes 8 hours of small-group Skype instruction, 1 hour of private Skype consultation, writing exercises, and 1 short story critique (story up to 5000 words).

This interactive workshop will teach authors how to write investigation scenes that are suspenseful and believable.

  • Surveillance: Auto, air support, GPS tracking, and cellular surveillance

  • Crime Scenes and Forensic Science: body recovery, DNA, fingerprints, blood spatter, footprints, tire treads, fibers, soil, insects, weapons and other types of evidence

  • Probable cause and Warrants
